The “Cosmic Clouds” Baby Blanket: A Super Soft & Textured Crochet Pattern

Welcome, fellow fiber artists! If you were inspired by the gorgeous, comforting textures shown in the video above, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve designed a brand-new, unique pattern—The Cosmic Clouds Baby Blanket—which uses a combination of open lacework and puffy cluster stitches to create a luxurious, cloud-like texture that’s perfect for snuggling. This blanket works up quickly and is easy to memorize once you establish the pattern.

Pattern Overview

DetailSpecification
Skill LevelEasy/Intermediate
Finished SizeApproximately 36 inches x 36 inches (can be easily adjusted)
Stitch MultipleMultiples of 6 + 4 for the foundation chain.

Materials

  • Yarn: 1200 – 1400 yards of Category 4 (Worsted Weight) soft yarn.
    • Recommendation: A blend like acrylic/bamboo or a plush chenille/velvet yarn for extra softness. I used 4 skeins of a hypoallergenic acrylic yarn.
  • Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors.

Gauge

1 repeat (one Cloud Cluster row followed by one V-Stitch row) should measure approximately 1.5 inches in height and 4 inches in width.

To check your gauge, chain 16, and work Rows 1-4 of the pattern (below). Your swatch should measure approximately 4 inches wide.

✨ Special Stitch: The Cloud Cluster (CC)

The Cloud Cluster (CC) is what gives this blanket its signature texture. It’s a 3-Double Crochet Cluster worked into a single stitch, chained closed, and followed by a chain-1 space.

How to make the Cloud Cluster (CC):

  1. Yarn over (yo), insert hook into specified stitch, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
  2. Yo, pull through first 2 loops (2 loops on hook).
  3. **[Yo, insert hook into the same stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through first 2 loops]** two times more (4 loops on hook).
  4. Yo, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.
  5. Ch 1 to lock the cluster. The next stitch in the pattern will be worked into the stitch after the stitch containing the CC.

Blanket Body

The blanket is worked in a repeating 4-Row Pattern Set.

Foundation Chain: Ch 136 (for the 36″ width).

Row 1: (V-Stitch Setup Row)

  • Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in the very first ch st you made (this creates the first V-Stitch base)
  • Dc in the next 2 sts.
  • **[Sk 2, dc in the next st, ch 1, dc in the same st (V-Stitch made)]**
  • Rep from ** across the row until 4 chs remain.
  • Sk 2, dc in the last 2 chs.
  • Turn.

Row 2: (Cloud Cluster Row)

  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the first dc.
  • Sc in the next dc.
  • **[CC (Cloud Cluster) in the ch-1 space of the next V-Stitch, sc in the next 3 sts]**
  • Rep from ** across the row. The last repeat will end with a CC in the last V-Stitch, followed by sc in the final 2 dc sts (the ch-3 from Row 1).
  • Turn.

Row 3: (Offset V-Stitch Row)

  • Ch 3 (counts as first dc).
  • Dc in the first sc.
  • Sk 1 sc, **[dc in the next sc, ch 1, dc in the same sc (V-Stitch made), sk 3 (sk the next sc, the CC, and the next sc)]**
  • Rep from ** across the row. You will end by working your final V-Stitch into the sc just before the final 2 scs.
  • Sk 1 sc, dc in the last 2 scs (the final sc, and the sc on top of the starting ch-3 from Row 1).
  • Turn.

Row 4: (Offset Cloud Cluster Row)

  • Ch 1, sc in the first dc.
  • **[CC (Cloud Cluster) in the ch-1 space of the next V-Stitch, sc in the next 3 sts]**
  • Rep from ** across the row. You will end with an sc in the final dc and the top of the ch-3.
  • Turn.

Repeat Rows 1-4 until the blanket measures approximately 35 inches long, or desired length. End after a Row 4 repeat.

Border (Simple Single Crochet Frame)

The border adds a neat finish and helps the edges lay flat.

Round 1: (Foundation Round)

  1. Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc evenly around the entire blanket edge.
  2. Top & Bottom Edges (worked into foundation/final row): Work 1 sc into each stitch and ch-1 space.
  3. Side Edges (worked into the ends of rows): Work 1 sc for every sc row-end and 2 sc for every dc row-end. Aim for a smooth, flat edge—if it ripples, decrease your sc count; if it pulls, increase it.
  4. Corners: Work (sc, ch 2, sc) in each of the four corners (4 cc made).
  5. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 2:

  1. Ch 1, sc in each sc around.
  2. Corners: Work (sc, ch 2, sc) into each ch-2 space from the previous round.
  3. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 3:

  1. Rep Round 2.
  2. Fasten off. Weave in all loose ends securely with your tapestry needle.

Your Cosmic Clouds Baby Blanket is now complete! Enjoy the gorgeous, pillowy texture!
