If you’ve ever scrolled through social media and stopped dead in your tracks for the cutest little accessory, you know the feeling. The viral charm of the crochet mini-purse by Sarita’s Creation, featured in their video “Blossom°!!💗 Crochet Mini Purse Design” [0Ss9XX9XA64], perfectly captures that moment.
Inspired by its compact size, firm structure, and utterly adorable aesthetic, I’ve designed an original pattern: The Sunburst Petal Pouch. This design focuses on a highly textured, dense fabric that gives your finished pouch a beautiful, tactile quality reminiscent of a blooming flower. It’s the perfect size for coins, earbuds, chapstick, or a small collection of essential stitch markers!

🌸 The Sunburst Petal Pouch Pattern 🌸
Pouch Details
- Finished Size (Approx.): 4.5 inches wide x 4 inches tall (11.5 cm x 10 cm). Size may vary slightly based on tension and yarn choice.
- Skill Level: Intermediate (Requires working in the round and executing Popcorn stitches).
Materials & Tools
| Item | Details |
| Yarn A (Main Color) | Fine (Category 2) or Light Worsted (Category 3) yarn. A cotton or cotton blend is recommended for stiffness and defined stitches. |
| Hook | Size D/3 (3.25 mm) or E/4 (3.5 mm). Use a smaller hook than recommended for your yarn to achieve a tight, dense fabric. |
| Zipper | One 6-inch (15 cm) nylon zipper (should be slightly longer than the pouch width for easier sewing). |
| Notions | Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker (essential for working in the round), sewing needle, and matching thread for zipper assembly. |
Special Stitches (US Terms)
| Abbreviation | Stitch Name | Definition |
| SC | Single Crochet | Standard single crochet stitch. |
| Mini Popcorn (MP) | 3-DC Popcorn Stitch | Work 3 DC stitches into the same stitch. Drop the loop from the hook. Insert the hook into the top of the first DC made. Pick up the dropped loop and pull it through the top of the first DC. Chain 1 to secure the stitch. The Chain 1 is part of the MP stitch and helps push the bobble forward. |
Part 1: The Base and Sides (Working in Continuous Rounds)
The pouch is worked in continuous rounds (spirals). Do not join rounds with a slip stitch unless instructed. Use a stitch marker to track the beginning of the round.
Chain: Ch 14.
Round 1 (Creating the Oval Base):
- SC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and in the next 11 Chs. (12 SC)
- 3 SC in the last Ch. (Turn the corner)
- Working down the opposite side of the chain: SC in the next 11 Chs. (11 SC)
- 2 SC in the last stitch (the same stitch as the first SC of the round). (Total: 28 SC). Do not join. Move marker to the first stitch of the next round.

Round 2 (Shaping the Base):
- Increase 1: 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 11 stitches.
- Increase 2: 2 SC in the next 3 stitches.
- Increase 3: SC in the next 11 stitches.
- Increase 4: 2 SC in the last 2 stitches. (Total: 34 SC).
Round 3 (Establishing Sides):
- SC in the back loop only (BLO) of every stitch around. (Total: 34 SC). This round creates the defined edge for the pouch bottom.
Rounds 4 – 5 (Building the Wall):
- SC in both loops of every stitch around. (Total: 34 SC).

Part 2: The Sunburst Petal Texture
Now we introduce the Mini Popcorn stitch to create the dense, textured “petals.”
Round 6 (Popcorn Placement):
- *SC in the next stitch, MP in the next stitch.*
- Repeat from * to * around. (Total: 17 SC and 17 MP stitches).
Round 7 (SC Stabilizing Round):
- SC in every stitch around, including the Chain 1 that secured the MP stitch from the previous round. (Total: 34 SC). Ensure you maintain 34 stitches by finding that SC and the chain on top of the Popcorn.
Round 8 (Offset Popcorn):
- SC in the first stitch.
- *MP in the next stitch, SC in the next stitch.*
- Repeat from * to * around. (The MP stitches should fall directly above the SC stitches from Round 6, creating a staggered brick-like pattern). (Total: 17 SC and 17 MP stitches).
Round 9 (SC Stabilizing Round):
- SC in every stitch around. (Total: 34 SC).
Rounds 10 – 15 (Continuing the Texture):
- Repeat Rounds 6-9, then repeat Rounds 6 and 7 once more. (You will end on an SC Stabilizing Round).

Part 3: The Top Edge
The top edge must be firm and even for zipper assembly.
Round 16 (Tidy Edge):
- SC in every stitch around. (Total: 34 SC).
Round 17 (Finishing Edge):
- SL ST in every stitch around. (Total: 34 SL ST). This creates a neat, low edge.
Fasten off and weave in the tail.
Part 4: Assembly and Finishing
The zipper adds the essential structure and function of the compact pouch seen in the inspiration video.
- Pin the Zipper:
- Lay the pouch flat and find the center of the top opening on both the front and back.
- Align the top edge of the pouch opening with one side of the zipper tape (not the teeth).
- Pin the zipper into place. You will need to curl the excess zipper tape at the ends under the fabric so that the zipper stop and pull are flush with the pouch edges.
- Sew the Zipper:
- Using a small, sharp sewing needle and matching thread, hand-sew the zipper securely into the slip stitch edge. Use a backstitch for durability. Sew slowly and carefully near the teeth.
- Add a Wrist Strap (Optional):
- Chain 20. SC in the 2nd Ch from the hook and SC across. Fasten off.
- Fold the SC strap in half and use the tapestry needle to sew one end securely into the side seam of the pouch (where the zipper meets the body).

Your Sunburst Petal Pouch is complete! The Popcorn stitches should create a beautiful, durable, and highly textured fabric perfect for holding your favorite small treasures.
